Check by means of a hydrometer

Direct method of check of the battery on a charge condition – the test by means of a high discharge which is carried out by means of the special exact voltmeter and expensive tool used in repair shops, but not recommended for automobile owners.

At temperature of the battery 20 C (electrolit temperature):

    The battery is completely charged, if relative density of electrolit makes 1.280. The battery is charged half if relative density of electrolit makes 1.220. The battery is almost discharged, if relative density of electrolit makes 1.150, and the electrolit is under the threat of freezing.

As relative density of electrolit varies under the influence of temperature if the temperature indicator does not correspond 20 C (68F), it is necessary to correct relative density indicators (measured by means of a hydrometer) to 20 C (68F) and to apply the received value of relative density to the three-point specified value.

The updating method can be seen in the schedule which shows the relative density and temperature attitude.

How to use the schedule of temperature correction of degree of a charge

Let's admit, the indicator of specific weight of electrolit is made 1.28, and by battery temperature — - 5 C (23F). Choose on an axis "Temperature" value - 5 C, and on an axis Specific weight - 1.28. Values will be crossed in a zone "And" (the shaded site on the schedule). It means that the battery is charged.

To learn a condition of a charge of the battery, will draw direct, parallel lines of differentiation of zones, and continue it to the right until it will not be crossed with a scale of percent. In this case, the line is crossed approximately in a point of 85 % with a scale of percent. Hence, the battery is charged on 85 %.
